Mr. Shadreck Kondala

Shadreck Kondala is a Lecturer in the Department of Arts, Languages and Literary Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zambia (UNZA), where he has taught since 2013. He holds a Master of Arts in Literature and a Bachelor of Arts with Education, both from UNZA, and is currently a PhD candidate in Literature at UNZA, researching the construction of national identity in contemporary Zambian fiction.

He teaches African prose fiction, African oral literature, literary criticism, and literary studies and creative writing in Zambian languages to both full-time and distance students, and has served as Literature Section Coordinator in the Department and as Coordinator for Zambian Languages at the University of Zambia Language Centre (UNZALAC), where he teaches Icibemba. He has also authored and reviewed course modules for the Institute of Distance Education at UNZA.

A trained translator and lexicographer, he worked for years with the Zambia Lexicographical and Terminological Initiative (ZALTI) and later UNZALAC, has co-authored the Longman Icibemba textbooks for Grades 8 and 9, and co-authored a Bemba phrase book and a Bemba learner’s textbook. His research focuses on literature in Zambian languages, Zambian literature in English, African oral literature, cultural and memory studies and, more recently, the place of oral literature, literacy and critical AI use in African-language education. He currently serves as a local consultant on the European Research Council-funded AFREXTRACT project of the University of Groningen and is a peer reviewer for several UNZA journals. He is a member of the Linguistics Association of SADC Universities (LASU).
